Light up the Contemporary Wood Crafts with the Spirit of Altar Tables
Artisan: Huang Yu-huang
Brand: Tang Huo

Established in 1984, Tang Huo is the wood artisan Huang Kuo-hao’s lifetime achievement. Although it was a century-long tradition that altar tables were made exclusively by men, he ignored it as his daughter Huang Yu-huang became his apprentice at the age of sixteen. Huang Yu-huang learned all the great skills of a wood artisan and everything one needed to know about making altar tables from her father. In recent years, as the second-generation owner of Tang Huo, she began making modern altar tables and wood crafts, designing and producing them by herself. Breathing fresh air into the traditional handcraft, Huang Yu-huang is one of the most promising wood artisans in Daxi in recent years.
In its heyday, there were more than a hundred woodshops in Daxi that made altar tables but now, only a handful have survived, and it is hard to find a young wood artisan under thirty. “Never abandon the traditions”, as Huang Kuo-hao keeps reminding his daughter, Huang Yu-huang always bears her father’s words in mind. Ever since she joined the profession, she has insisted on making altar tables with the traditional techniques. As altar tables are no ordinary furniture, one must choose the wood strictly and treat every step of the production process with extreme care, including the traditional wood mortise-and-tenon joint, carving, painting, and decoration to ensure the top quality of the finished products.
Adjusting to the changing times and the evolving wood market, Huang Yu-huang brings in new designs and ideas, including combining the woods of different textures and colors and challenging the traditional image of altar tables. By cleverly integrating traditions into the modern furniture design, she creates a contemporary feel through the details such as the shapes of handles, chair backs, and table legs, bringing new inspirations to the traditional woodcrafts.
In addition, Huang Yu-huang collaborates with schools and other institutes on an irregular basis. She offers basic woodworking classes and has developed a series of wooden educational toys, including Daxi dried tofu toy cars, Daxi braised dried tofu wooden toy sets and the DIY wooden toy cars for young children designed for parents and children to make them together. By making the toys themselves, children learn to appreciate and love the toys even more. Furthermore, it allows the traditions to be passed down from one generation to another in their distinctive looks.
